:: FAQs

Should I do anything before my first session?

You might want to think about the ways in which you'd like counselling to help you. Whether they are part of a couple or not, people find counselling and sex therapy very useful

How often will have appointments?

Sessions are usually once a week and last up to an hour. Counselling will continue as long as you and the counsellor think it is helpful. Most people find six or seven sessions is about right for counselling, while sex therapy can last a bit longer.

Do I have to pay for Chesterfield Relate's services?

Yes. You will be expected to pay a fee to cover the cost of your sessions. Our aim isn't to make a profit and we do offer some subsidised sessions.

Do Chesterfield Relate counsellors have special training?

All our counsellors have received training in couple counselling. We may speak to you about seeing a 'counsellor-in-training', but please be reassured that they will have gone through a rigorous selection and training process and will be receiving close professional support.

Does Chesterfield Relate comply with any recognised standards?

Chesterfield Relate is a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and our counsellors are members of the British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapy (BASRT).

Is everything I say confidential?

Counselling is a private and confidential form of support and Chesterfield Relate holds information about our clients and their counselling in strict confidence. The only time we would reveal details to anyone outside our organisation would be to protect someone from serious harm, especially a child.
